How to set my own backdrop on my ipod video?

I'm trying to add my own backdrop, and yes, I've read the manual about this.  I have an Ipod Video, and my problem is that I can't find a way to save a jpeg I have as a 16 bit bitmap, which apparently I need to do to use the image as my backdrop.  What is a good program to do this?  Paint only lets me do 16 color, 256 color, or 24 bit, and GIMP just says "bitmap" and doesn't mention the quality.  When I save it as anything else it doesn't even show up in rockbox.  How do I do this?

You can save it as a 24bit bmp using paint and it should work, make sure it is exactly the right size for the width and height.

EDIT: nevermind, I had to change rockbox to display all files, not just supported ones.  It works perfectly now, thanks for the help earlier robin.

Ok, I did that, but now I have another problem.  The manual says to put it in the /.rockbox/backdrops directory if I want it to be saved as the backdrop.  When I do that I can't find it on my ipod, so I put it both there and just inside the ipod drive (outside of the .rockbox folder).  I can find it then on rockbox (it's just inside the "files" folder) and I can change the backdrop just fine, but when I turn the ipod off it won't come back on unless I do a soft reset, and the backdrop doesn't stay set.  Any idea what the problem is now?

What exactly do you mean by this?  If the file is in the backdrops folder, it should appear there.  Just navigate to that folder.  Your .bmp's you wish to use as backdrops must be stored in that folder, or else as you have discovered they will not be saved in your config file.  Make sure the file you set as a backdrop is located where it should be.  From my experience, your backdrops cannot even be in a subfolder within the backdrops folder

I found out what the problem was, and it works fine now.  Rockbox was set to only show supported files, which for some reason didn't let me even see the ".rockbox" folder where the backdrops are stored.  When I changed it to show all files I could see those folders, and now I see them no matter if I tell it to display supported files or all files.  Weird.

Also note that if you change your settings and then do a hard reset your settings will not be saved.  You should do a proper shutdown in order to save your settings.
