Installed on F40 but something just ain't right!!
« on: December 24, 2007, 04:08:28 PM »
I have Rockbox installed on my MEGF40, but now I only get a menu at the top that reads (in VERY small letters):

Rockbox
  Files
  Database
  Resume Playback
  Settings
  Playlists
  Plugins
  System

Shouldn't I have a pretty straightforward MP3 player menu by now??

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!

What isn't straightforward about that menu?

My advice is to just explore the menu options, and read the manual:

http://www.rockbox.org/manual.shtml

You may also want to select a theme with a larger font.

Really?

So I can't choose by artist or by genre or anything?

Maybe this program is a bum deal.  Did it wipe out my original software?  Will it go back to its original state if I uninstall?

ALL I want to do is be able to put my music on the player using Windows Vista.

Of course you can. For rockbox, you can drag-and-drop music and then use the database to sort by artist, album, genre, etc. Just be sure to initialize it first (just select database and, when rockbox asks, say "yes" to initialize it).

OK I got the database working!

BUT, it only recognizes music I put straight into the player (not using GigaBeat room), not what I already had on the drive.

Do I need to take all the music off and start over?

Gigabeat Room encrypts all the music it copies onto your device, which means that Rockbox can't play it.

So yes, you need to delete all the ".sat" files created by Gigabeat Room and copy the files again using Windows Explorer.

Yes, just follow the instructions
http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/GigabeatFXPort#Remove_SAT_Encryption_Optional
for AFTER you've installed rockbox.

OK now I took all the music off, restarted and everything, and the database still lists music that I've taken off the player.

Hmmm.....

You have to update the database. Go to Settings->General Settings->Database->Initialize Database that will completely rebuild the database so it is most up-to-date.

Bad news:

I added gigs upon gigs of music to the player (which the player recognizes as files), but it still has the old database.

I DID go to general settings, database, initialize now (then it said updating in background) and it didn't update the database.

What am I doing wrong here?
