Sansa unsupported "v2" models question
« on: December 22, 2007, 01:44:18 PM »
Greetings!  I have been looking for clarification about the new "Version 2" hardware on some Sansa models which is unsupported.

I found this info on the BuyersGuide: The Sansa c200 series seems to have a new "v2" model available. These can be distinguished from a v1 easily by looking for the line "Supports Audible audio file formats" on the product's description on the packaging. Rockbox does not work on these v2 models; they appear to be using a new chipset.  I was reading Wikipedia's article on the Sansa, which mentions rockbox, but indicates that the new hardware is on e200 models.  I plan to edit the article, but I wanted to confirm that the info on the BuyersGuide was the best available.  Is this hardware only on c200 models?

Thanks in advance for any info!

Thanks for the quick info!

I just bought a refurbished E260, which has yet to arrive.  I'm fairly confident Rockbox will be able to work on it, as I doubt V2's are being sold refurb yet.  It's not going to come with the original box, so I can't check for the "Supports Audible audio file formats" clue.

Does anyone know if there is a good way of identifying the hardware version just by looking at the device?

Not really, since the only label that tells you is on the back plate (which is interchangeable between the two versions, and we've heard of v1s being sold with v2 backplates).

The best way once you have the device is to boot it up and check the firmware version. If the version number starts with a 1 it's v1 hardware, if it starts with a 3 it's v2 hardware.

... and note that there are at least four known Sansa models that are "v2": http://daniel.haxx.se/sansa/v2.html
