How to load ogg from Ubuntu/Linux onto an IPod 5g?
« on: December 20, 2007, 07:28:21 PM »
Hello folks,

I installed Rockbox on my Ipod 5G 60GB. All went fine. The reason why I did this is to play ogg-files on the IPod. But now I am stuck as gtkpod won't load oggs to the player. Amarok does not connect. After searching in Forums and Wikis I ask you now:

How do you fill your Ipod with ogg-files on ubuntu or other linux distris?

Cheers and thanks a lot!

You can just drag and drop. Rockbox doesn't need a special program.

Ok, I read now a thread about putting flac on an Ipod simply using the explorer ...

Is this the same with ogg? ut as I see gtkpod saves the music into directories as ipod_controls/F01 and renames the files to funny codes like gtkpod004751.mp3.
Is this simply to get unique names? Or is it a must? Or?!?

Thanks again.

Its the same for all formats.  It wouldn't make sense to have a different procedure for loading each of the dozens of formats rockbox can play.

Thats for the Apple firmware, not rockbox.

PS: This would be a nice point in the wiki or FAQ, won't it?

Hello Saratoga,

thanks for your hint about  the manual. But I still can't find anything like:

Loading Data onto your Player
Loading data onto your media player depends on your hardware device. In general it is possible to copy your music onto the player by teh file manager. Rockbox does not expect your media files to be in a certain directory. You can just dump them into the root directory of the player or in any other directory keeping your very own naming convention.
Warning:
On dual boot systems like iPods with Rockbox you wont be able to play the music with the orignal Apple firmware unless you are loading the media files onto your ipod matching Apples  file and directory naming conventions. To do so use suitable software like ITunes or gtkIpod. Note that these programms will not allow you to load media files that are not supported by apples firmware (i.e. ogg vorbis)

I have no idea if the text above is true. I am testing it now. You are comletely right with the manual. And the point loading data is missing ...

Cheers,
Yellowshark

The manual says "The File Browser lets you navigate through the files and directories on your player, " suggesting rather strongly that the only important point is that the files and directories are on your player.

Rockbox honestly doesn't care how your music gets there, the only really important thing is that you, the user, know what folder it's in if you're using the file browser. Writing 400 different ways to do it would be somewhat redundant.
