clean install for ipod video
« on: December 20, 2007, 03:25:40 PM »
Hey everyone. totally stoked to find an open source solution for firmware for media players.

So I have an ipod video 30gb, and I would like to use RockBox as much as possible. What would be the cleanest way to wipe everything off the ipod (that apple put on) including all media files (I've got them all nicely backed up  ;D)? I used to use it with iTunes (so I reckon it is FAT32 formatted).. could I just do a rm -f *? (yeah.. I'm using another great piece of software.. Ubuntu!  ::)) The only thing that rockbox absolutely needs is that .rockbox directory right?

thanks.

The iPod_Control folder is where the Apple firmware stores most everything.  I think iTunes will also create folders such as "Calendar."
Note:  iPod_Control will be recreated upon rebooting into Apple firmware.
But sure, feel free to delete anything you see - Rockbox doesn't need anything but .rockbox (and perhaps a place to store your music? (but that's not needed by Rockbox)) and the Apple firmware will boot even if you delete everything off that main partition.

yeah thanks. I did wipe everything.. and then start from scratch with the rockbox firmware. Everything worked great.

Then I realised that video plays better under the ipod firmware.. so I re-created the directory structure with gtkpod (floola complained if I didn't), and then started using floola no worries... well floola did warn me about having no preference file, but all seems to work fine without it.

So big bonus for me was that I could skip using iTunes altogether.  ;D
