You have to set the Gigabeat usb mode to "gigabeat room" mode to get it to be UMS mode, otherwise it is in MTP mode.  I think when you make this setting in the OF something gets written to flash memory since I couldn't install rockbox on mine until I made this change in settings while running the OF.  (But there may be another way to get into usb-bootloader mode).

The Sony PSP charger works perfectly with the H300 series.

No you don't. I never once fiddled with anything in the orignal firmware on mine. I plugged it into USB, turned it on, and installed Rockbox. No MTP/MSC fiddling required at all.
