I keep rebooting it and it Rockbox comes up and says it cannot find the file rockbox.ipod (or something). When I go to My Computer the window stops responding. Occasionally when i reboot it the apple comes up and after about about an hour the normal ipod display comes up. When this last happened I plugged the iPOD into my computer and it said 'DO NOT DISCONNECt but when I opened itunes my IPOd was not there.

You haven't completed the installation by installing a Rockbox build.  Put the iPod in Disk Mode as described in the installation chapter of the Manual, and then install a Rockbox build.

Are you saying that your friend installed Rockbox on your iPod and that your iPod worked properly for a few days?  Or are you saying that your friend installed Rockbox on his own iPod?

If Rockbox worked previously on your iPod, then most likely (1) you have done something to remove the rockbox.ipod file, or (2) your hard drive has a problem.   Try putting your iPod in disk mode and running a chkdsk /f /r.
