iAudio 7
« on: December 14, 2007, 08:14:31 AM »
Hi there, As far as I can tell the iAudio 7 is the best option for an Ogg/linux compatible flash player. However, the lack of gapless playing is a killer. Is there any indication that there will be a Rockbox port for this player to support gapless playing?
Thanks for the great work.

Why? If you run Rockbox all but the Archos units automagically become 'Ogg/linux compatible'. So if you really want a flash player it's a toss-up between the iPod nano and the Sansa.

Neither of those offer 16GB options as far as I know.

What's the consensus on maximum capacity Rockbox supported HD players by the way?

Currently the largest known HD for a Rockbox software-codec player is 80gb.

Currently the largest flash player is 8GB + 6GB of MicroSDHC, with that expanding as newer cards will come out.

Not counting modifications of HD based players to use compactflash cards, etc.

Thanks for that.

Which players are these exactly? Sorry for being thick, I'm not an expert in this area.

Is there any chatter about whether the iAudio 7 will be RockBoxed anytime soon?

The iAudio 7 will be Rockboxed just as soon as people who own it do it. So, I encourage you to pick one up, and chip in.

An 80gb HD can be put in any of the 40/60/80gb players we support, I believe. The flash player I was referring to was the Sansa e200 series, specifically the e280 for maximum internal flash.

Is anyone out there on the case?

Jeepers, I only wish I had the skillz to do this. I just about get by as a humble user. No way I'm buying this gizmo without gapless support imminent, I'll take a look at the Sansa, it seems crappy but I guess Rockbox makes it groovy...

Thanks for the info Saratoga, I guess you are one of the main guys around this project?

-----

Anyway, I now think that I'll have to scratch the whole iaudio idea because of the gappy playback and forget about flash players because 8/10 GB is not enough.

Can anyone recommend a course of action to get a solid rockbox player with a masximum capacity drive? My impression is that picking up an obsolete gigabeat machine on ebay and swapping out the HD is the way to go. Or is this horse apples?

Any advice more than welcome.

Actually, getting a Gigabeat and putting in a larger hard drive is a brilliant idea!

Get yourself an F40, since they're a little thicker than the F10/F20, and will allow you to add in up to an 80GB drive.

Ace.

Is there an idiot guide to buying and installing HDs into the F40 anywhere? Is the 80GB limit for Rockbox or is it on the Gigabeat?

Thanks for the advice.

80GB is the limit because of connector differences with the hard drives in the Gigabeat, and newer hard drives coming out.

Will the connector differences continue to be a problem as larger drives are released? I find I can't get a drive above 60 GB for my H140 and I love that DAP but want 100+ GB on it (and drives of that size and width are out but all use ZIF!). :-(
