I was never able to successfully downgrade the firmware of my player, if i had i could just change a setting and not have to force into MSC mode everytime, is that correct?

Are you holding left whilst plugging in in the original firmware?  If so, yes changing to a version which had the setting between MTP and MSC would mean not having to hold the button.  However, I know nothing about how the OF works, and so perhaps a Sansa guru can help at here!
