"Rockbox Media Player" Detected in Windows XP Hardware Wizard, Can't Access Play
« on: December 09, 2007, 11:13:37 AM »
Frequently with the iPod Video I get a Windows popup when I plug it in, trying to find a device driver for "Rockbox Media Player."

If I cancel, I can't access the device. Rebooting the device (either soft or hard) several times makes no difference.

Eventually, for no reason I can pin down, it works again.

I've seen this problem with other players (e.g., http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=13950.0 and http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=13950.0) but not for the iPod.

Any suggestions?

That's because of the USB stack which is still in progress. Right now, it really just draws the correct voltage from the USB port, but you can't access the filesystem yet.

Just ignore Windows' asking for a driver. There isn't one.

I am confused by this response. It sounds like you're saying filesystem access doesn't work with rockbox -- but it does. It has worked for months for me, and, until recently, worked 100% of the time. Recently, I've been getting this hardware wizard prompt after which I can't access the filesystem. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Just canceling the driver request doesn't fix it. Can you please elaborate?

No. Filesystem access under Rockbox has never worked. All that Rockbox did previously was to reboot into Apple's disk mode. Now with our own USB stack in place and under development - you'll have to put it into Apple's disk mode manually.

Ah, that clarifies it. Thank you. I am having a bit of trouble booting into Apple firmware now -- it used to be that you just turned it on with the lock on, but now that is rebooting it into what appears to be a "safe mode" -- Rockbox but with none of my theme settings. Is there something else that's changed that I'm missing?

That "safe mode" means you've cleared your config settings - and tells me you're not switching the hold switch to the on position fast enough.

You don't need to boot into the original firmware though - just disk mode will do. See the top post in this forum for details on how to do it.

Okay, all fixed. Thanks for the guidance.

I'm a bit perplexed at why the original support was disabled before Rockbox's USB support was ready. Maybe this topic has been beaten to death elsewhere, though.

It wasn't disabled.

What I meant was -- why the feature that previously automatically rebooted into Apple's disk mode was disabled. It used to work automatically.

Because we couldn't both provide that, AND provide the 500mA charging request over USB.

i still think it whould be good to add a "latest woring" download to the downloads page, so standard users that have no intention or knowledge to code or eaven compile still always can download a working build... i know that developers do not want this because this slows down development, but i think this whould gain a faster growing usergroup and so in long terms also more developers.

I was about to suggest that a note be put on the frontpage to let everyone know about this...

and then realized there already was one.

The current build should always work.  I can't remember the last time it did not.

hmm, maybe u are right, but we had a problem with some ipod nanos caused by something about ide timing if i remember right and many of the nanos just did not work at 80mhz and no working version was downloadable from rockbox.org.
if i get u right the current build does not contain the new usb stack? i did not try to install a new version since the ide bug was solved...

It contains the USB stack, but it doesn't work yet.

Also, work on your grammar.  Its annoying to read when you write like that.
