An Experiment with overheating - Ipod Nano
Slashrim:
I have only recently installed Rockbox on my 1st gen Ipod Nano 2 gig, and my first experiences where good- much better that iPL. But I was very annoyed that when I tried to play my music, tehre was a lot of electronic interference in it. After some browsing on these forums, I figured that it was overheating. So, I took a pack of iceblocks, and froze my ipod. Then, I tried it. No skips, no interference. Video playback is smoother, and it runs better.
Just thought I'd share this. Maybe Apple should add ventalation slits?

...Or maybe you should add ventilation slits.
Seriously.
Understand that I'm not trying to be insulting or anything. I'm seriously suggesting that. You could take apart the 'Pod (I have done that with that very model, and although the repair I was attempting failed miserably, the taking apart was a non-issue.) and use a Dremel (A rotary hand tool; think of an electric drill, but in a straight line.) to cut slits in the back. Then you could tell your friends how very 1337 you are until they got bored and left.
Also, you need to bear in mind that Apple never designed these things to be spectacular marvels of computing power, and, in your case, to play video. They wanted to make a music player in a sleek package. I wish I had found Rockbox back when I had mine; I hated iPL (It's just so much trouble.).
If you have doubt in your ability to cut nice-looking (If you care about that.) slits in the back of your iPod, then DON'T. Go to someone you trust to do that for you, or look on do-it-yourself forums, or car-modding forums, for tips. Also, be exceedingly careful with the wires leading to the battery; I broke the solder connections to the board, which is how I bricked mine (One month out of warranty and the screen cracks! Damn!). Really, just be careful.
Hope this helps.
