how often do you update?

leland:
Apologies if this is in a wiki, prior discussions (brief search failed), but I'm wondering how often people update their rockbox install?

I'm torn between:
1) Wanting the latest and greatest
2) Not wanting to break something

I'd like to update to get 'major/minor' upgrades -- something like the M$ monthly update (I hate waiting for the SPs). Unfortunately the news on the homepage (and elsewhere) doesn't help me determine when I should d/l a new version of rockbox - especially if there are features that are only in the version I use (Gigabeat F40).

What does the community recommend? Looking forward to enlightenment (and maybe a flame or two).

scharkalvin:
I don't bother updating unless an important fix or new feature was added.
Recent examples were a fix for the Gigabeat losing the time at midnite on sat, or the cover art addition.

LambdaCalculus:
It's normally up you, the user, how often you want to update. But speaking as a Rockbox tester, I usually:

1) Update when there are major changes
2) Find an issue with any SVN build I'm using at the time. and need to verify if it's still carrying
3) Need to report problems as per the forum and IRC guidelines

I would recommend trying to keep yourself as up to speed as possible. Rockbox changes every day, and bugs that may crop up in one build may get squashed within a few builds.

Also note: No features will ever just get pulled, unless there's a damn good reason for it. So sail worry-free, knowing that you're a part of a great community here.

But some people (not me) have gotten po'ed by recent key map changes for some players.

bascule:
There's always that risk, but you can always revert to a previous daily build.

I update about once a week, or instantly if I see a feature I've been waiting for (like USB Stack on the Sansa)
