c240 firmware rollback fails
« on: December 07, 2007, 09:30:50 AM »
Does anyone know why rolling back the firmware on c240 would fail?

I am trying to install Rockbox, but I cannot set the unit to MSC mode since the option is not available in Settings.  I followed the directions on the Rockbox c200 wiki to downgrade the firmware, but the firmware never changes. There are no errors, but upon restarting the c240 the system info shows the firmware unchanged and the uption to set USB to MSC is still not there.

I followed the following steps:
    * Power off
    * Turn ON lock/hold
    * Hold REC button and press MENU button (used to turn the player on/off)
    * Plug the player to the computer
    * I can see new drive 16MB-FORMAT
I copy the unzipped files into the 16mb drive, unplug the player, and release the hold switch. (Info gathered from here)

After that, the firmware is unchanged and I still cannot see an option to set the USB to MSC. I would appreciate any advice on how to overcome this problem.
Thanks,
Timothy

What firmware version are you rolling back from, and what version do you want to roll back to?

The c240 System Info reports 01.01.05P. I followed the directions on the wiki to rollback to 1.01.00.

I know this may sound silly, but did you download 1.01.00P, or perhaps did you grab another one by accident?

I downloaded     SansaC200A1_01_00.7z. The wiki specified "A" for American and I assumed mine was American. I don't know what the other version are for. Should I use     SansaC200P1_01_00.7z ?
Thanks,
Timothy

Yes, that one should match your Sansa.

(Side note: My Sansa has OF version 1.01.00P, and I purchased it here in the States.)

That solved my problem. It would be useful to have some explanation of the different firmware versions available.
Thanks,
Timothy

General rule of thumb: if a firmware has a suffix letter, stay with any firmwares that share it. Example: Update a Sansa with firmware 1.01.00P with another "P" firmware for the device.

Exception to the rule: Patching the iriver firmware to use Rockbox. There, you can't use a U.S. firmware, even if your device is from the U.S. ;)

I updated the wiki to say "choose the letter version that matches your existing firmware".

I have been unable to downgrade my C240.  I followed the instructions to downgrade from 01.01.05P.  I copied SansaC200P1_01_00.7z to the 16MB-FORMAT "drive".

The C240 screen indicates that the update is complete and that it is resetting the unit.  When I check settings, there is no "USB" setting and the firmware version still indicates 01.01.05P.

Is there another trick?

Thanks.

Files ending in .7z are archives like .zip and .rar, you need to extract the contents using software that's compatible.  Search the web.

To quote the wiki:

"To update the firmware, copy the unzipped files into the 16mb drive, unplug the player, and release the hold switch."

Can you think of a clearer way to explain that step?  (There is no sarcasm in my voice here, I'd actually like your opinion).

Thanks for the very quick and very patient reply!

I had a senior moment.  For some reason I read "unzipped" as keep it zipped!  I knew about 7z.

The downgrade worked fine.  Thanks, again.
