USB mode destroyed in c240
« on: December 07, 2007, 09:21:58 AM »
Hey guys, after doing much research I decided to put Rockbox on my refurb c240 that I got recently.  Wow.  I was extremely impressed with the software and all that it allows.

Of course, things weren't that easy.  After figuring out how to put the rockbox files onto the player in MSC mode(umm...add that to your manual...) and then successfully finding filetypes that it wouldn't spit out, I started loading OGG files onto the root of the device.  During a file transfer of like 40 OGGs, that player then said 'the directory or file cannot be created' during the transfer.

I still haven't been able to put on another damn song!  I really suggest that a USB driver be successfully written, b/c this just blows.  I'm ready to just throw the whole thing out if I can't even put music on it.  *Of course it transfers fine in MTP MODE*... AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Yes.  I even did a firmware update reverting back to good ol' Sansa firmware (lol).  But to no avail!  That's even worse I know, so there's probably some kind of defect in my Sansa c240.  Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, because the file transfers are done inside the original firmware, any issues are not going to be caused by Rockbox.

My suggestions would be to try a different USB cable, a different port on your computer, or a different computer and see if any of those make a difference.

Running checkdisk also might not be a bad idea.

See that's what I was thinking also.  Somehow, mysteriously, I was able to create a new folder and dumped mp3s in it.  They play fine.  Now I am unable to do that again...and it's locked out.  I'm not out of disk space either.

Yeah I need to find another Sansa USB cable, I only have one.  Tried different USB port.  Still same.

I ran scandisk as soon as it happened the first time and it came up with no errors.

 ???
Bizarre.  How bizarre.  The circumstances would lead me to believe that the cable is bad, but it does transfer fine in MTP mode.

Well I deleted my OGGs off the root and that seemed to have done the trick.  I put them in folders instead and now it writes fine.

I have no clue why it cut off write access but it has something to do with placing 125 OGG files in the root directory.

I thought that FAT allowed for this so I'm at a loss.....but it works.

Keep in mind that the FAT filesystem has a hard limit on the number of entries in the root directory.  For a 1GB fs, this would be 512.  However long filenames (i.e. non-8.3) use more than one entry.
