I have a F40. Anyone do the current Automated installation? Which is preferred?

The automated install will certainly be the simplest.  Go ahead and try it.

But I'm scarred to. Honestly. With all the posts on here about crashing their DAP, I am nervous.

If you follow the instructions carefully then you will be fine.  Generally people have problems when they don't carefully read the instructions and do something that they shouldn't have.

Also, realize that these are technical forums and you don't tend to hear from the people for whom the installation went smoothly.  As such you might get a skewed idea of the statistics -- the posts on the installation forum do not represent a random sampling across all users.

The installation actually is just a matter of renaming one file, copying one file, and unzipping a file into the root directory of the device.  You should perform the unzip operation first, then the file rename and file copy. The last two operations install the bootstrap which is what can render the player un-bootable if not done correctly.  (Easy to recover from this though).

So long as the USB connection from your player to the computer remains stable and the batteries in your player don't drop dead half way into the file operations everything should go fine.  (That's why the recommendation to NOT use the dock to connect the player and to plug the ac power supply into the player while doing the install).

If you are comfortable with DOS command line file operations installing Rockbox on the Gigabeat is a snap and you can do it in your sleep.  The Sansa and iPod installs are trickier since they have to use a patching utility to modify an existing boot loader (but the patch utility hides the dirty work).

Despite the simplicity of the manual method as outlined above by scharkalvin, I still recommend the automated install method.

Sure it makes it easier.  But not much more than a simple shell script it required.

I used the automated install with my F10. It went well all the way until it asked me to download a theme, then the installer locked up. I killed the program, disconnected the F10, and Rockbox was successfully installed. I then manually downloaded some themes and got it finished off manually.

In other words, installing rockbox was pretty easy with the utility but installing themes wasn't so easy.

There is no way to avoid the onerous task of... dum dum dum... Reading, The, Manual.

It's worth it.  Chapter two has a hot love scene at the end.
