Encoding Files With MediaCoder
« on: December 06, 2007, 02:23:25 PM »
I've followed all of the instructions contained at http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/PluginMpegplayer
and have downloaded and used MediaCoder to encode a file for use on my rockbox'd Gigabeat F40. The file that resulted from this process was a .mp4 file. Is that right?

The file plays just fine in Windows Media Player (when I click on it while my device is connected to my computer and after Media Player acquires a new codec), but when I try to play it in my device, it says "no file". Is this because it's an .mp4 rather than .mpeg? If so, how do I adjust MediaCoder to have its output be in .mpeg form?

If that's not it, what am I doing wrong? I am able to play the sample mpeg "Elephant Dream" on my player just fine, so I know that part of the equation is working just fine.

Adjust the settings (sorry, I've no details as I use WinFF) to encode to MPEG-2

Did that--there are only 2 choices in the dropdown in the Firefox window that pops up when you click on the "extensions" button-- "MEPG-1" and "MPEG-2". I've carried out the process both ways, but I still get an .mp4 file on the other side. This can't be right, eh?

There must be another separate option to set the container format. Set that to mpg.

I just went ahead and downloaded WinFF. It worked, and it's faster and more intuitive--just all around easier to use. I would steer people away from MediaCoder.

I tried experimenting with MediaCoder before, and my stance is that it's definitely not my encoder of choice. I had suffered dropped frames, artifacting, and sloppy resizing from nearly every single video I fed it. I'm very hard pressed to even mention it to people.

WinFF and/or VLC will be my choices for encoding from now on.
