Problem with bass in the last builds
« on: December 06, 2007, 11:34:12 AM »
Hi,

I am having bass problems in the last builds on my ipod 80Go. When i put the bass to 8(the settings i had for a really long time), the sound gluts, by that i means it deformed with a lot of noise when there is basses. it s almost impossible to listen to. I even think i still have the problem when there is no bass but a lot less audible.

I tried with a clean install of an official build. Nothing changes

Any idea where it could come from?

The additional gain that you are adding is causing clipping.  Try this:

1.  Turn on the equalizer, but keep the gain on all of the equalizer channels set at 0.

2.  Adjust the "pre-cut" setting to -8 dB.

3.  Raise the volume to compensate for the gain you reduced through the pre-cut.

If you're talking about an iPod Video, up until recently the Bass setting did nothing but raise the volume. That's been fixed now, so maybe that's why you're having problems.

Ok, just for people to know, it works like a charm. At last i have a sound close to what i had on my H3x0. I think maybe there should be a page on the wiki dedicated to that particularity of the bass on Ipods. It s not easy to understand and a lot of people might be confused about that.

Anyway thanks a lot Febs, i just love Rockbox more everyday!

Well it's pretty much what you should be doing anyway. Any time you increase part of the signal (i.e. you up the bass) you should decrease the overall volume to avoid clipping. Most systems do this automatically for you, but Rockbox lets you do what you want and assumes you know what you're doing.
