H120 not able to boot Rockbox
« on: December 05, 2007, 09:58:46 AM »
Hi all,

I’m new to this whole game; and have got my first MP3 player. I am chuffed to bits with it and decided to try your software mainly for the sound settings; but hopefully for other as yet unknown things too.

I decided to use the manual installer; and everything went fine. I extracted the current build and fonts ZIPs into the player (and have the folder “rockbox” all fine); and got the boot loader patched OK; and upgraded the firmware too.
However when I turned the H120 on it still boots the iRiver’s software.

In the bootloader it says:
Version 6
3.99v
Result -1 –This bit flashes past very fast

I understand the -1 bit refers to not having the rockbox folder unzipped properly; so I updated and tried again. –Still no difference.

So I uninstalled, and reinstalled via the Utility; which says the bootloader is already installed and up to date. & it can’t seem to download the rockbox.zip file; (says received HTTP error 1129270319.) so I’m stuck.

Help! -Can anyone please tell me what to do now?

Thanks for any replies

What operating system are you running on your PC? Also, what program did you use to extract the Rockbox build with?

I ask that because some archiving apps don't seem to keep the . in the .rockbox folder intact, which can result in the -1 error.

It comes up as an I. drive;
I have a network drive that calls it'self I do i have to disable it in order to see the iRiver though.

Er; -do you mean this ie how it comes up on my computer when plugged in? -Or do you mean how it looks when you open the drive?
If so it's got:
RockboxUtility.ini
ihp_120.hex
iRivNavi.iDB
winamp_cache_001.xml
pmp_usb.ini
RockboxUtility.exe
.rockbox
then all the music either in folders or as MP3s

I hope that's the answer that helps!  :)

Windows will not give the same drive name to two devices, so either your network drive is not attached, or your H120 is appearing as a different drive letter.

Once you have established with some certainty that you are looking at the H120 hard drive, please fully answer BigBambi's question and list (as a minimum) the folders you can see on the root of the drive and any files also there.

OK, so it looks as if the /.rockbox folder was extracted properly. To be sure, please open that folder and describe the contents as you did above for the root of the drive.

Specifically look for a file named rockbox.iriver, but list the other folders/files as well.

OK, we have 2 folders caled rockbox, one with a "." in front
so:
.rockbox has nothing in
rockbox has the following folders:
backdrops
codecs
codepages
docs
eqs
fonts
langs
represets
rocks
themes
wps

and the following files:

database.ignore (ignore file)
rockbox.iriver (IRIVER file)
rockbox-info.txt (IRIVER file)
tagnavi.config (config file)
viewers.config (config file)

yeah, everything that is in the "rockbox" folder, actually needs to be in the ".rockbox" folder.

Looks like AZarc didn't extract the archive properly!

I suggest trying again... but this time, use 7-zip to do the job.  :)

That is the problem.  Everything should be in .rockbox.

If I were you, I would delete both rockbox and .rockbox and start again, this time with sensible archiving software.  I suggest 7zip, it is free and works properly.  Extract direct to the iriver harddrive.

Alternatively, use the rockbox utility http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome?topic=RockboxUtility which should do it all for you.

OK, Good at least I know there's an issue I can sort.
I tried to uninstall via the Utility; but it seems to have duplicated the rockbox folder; -and then coudn't download the Zip. Do you think I can simply delete stuff from the drive? -If so what do i gwet rid of?
Cheers for all your help.

Take Rockbox Utility out of the iriver's hard drive and place it elsewhere on your computer.

Everything else can stay, but take the advice that me, BigBambi, and GodEater gave you before... delete the rockbox and .rockbox folders, then download it once more and extract it with 7-zip.

Once it's running, enjoy!
