F40 - USB to my camera ?
« on: December 04, 2007, 05:03:53 PM »
I would like to use the rockboxed F40 for storing photos of my DLSR when I'm far away from my PC, I'm shooting RAW and it produce heavy files (~15 MB per photo), it would save me the cost of multiple CF cards.

Is there a solution with rockbox or at least dual boot (possible with original firmware) ?
Someone working on it ?

Thanks for any info.

Nothing yet that can be used: neither dual-boot nor USB host support

The gigabeat F series has hardware USB support as far as I know - which means a USB host mode is next to impossible.

Some people were saying that the Gigabeat F series has USB hosting capability, but that it would require someone to construct an adapter for the dock port (or simply use the dock) but this still would require code in Rockbox.

Yes you can use USB host with the original firmware and the cradle so the other solution would be dual booting.
Is someone working on it ?

It would make the rockboxed F40 the ideal gadget for the audiophile (vorbis aotuv -q8 is so much better)  and photograph amateur on the go.

The Gigabeat F has:
  • a USB ATA bridge with a connector on the device itself

The Cradle has:
  • a 4 port USB hub connected to:
    • the USB ATA bridge
    • the USB device of the CPU
  • the USB host of the CPU

Yep, the dock has a normal-sized female USB port on the side, which works as a USB host. Not too sure how well it works because all I know about it is what I read in the manual.  :D

But dual-boot does work, you need to have the original firmware named something specific and you need to hold a certain button on boot, but you will need to connect it to a computer to rename it back for going back to rockbox. Check out the gigabeat wiki page for info.

When I'm far from a computer, I need an easiest way to switch from the toshiba firmware and rockbox.
If I had my PC I wouldn't need the F40 for storing my pictures.

Yeah, that's not really dual-boot as much as "restore original firmware".

I thought that most 'button action' were removed from the bootloader. When I look at the code I don't see any specific actions anymore for the gigabeat, part from reading a button to display the version info. Am I missing something?
