Problems on Sansa c240 installation.
« on: December 04, 2007, 01:58:56 PM »
I just got a refurb(r0xors!) Sansa c240, and neither my XP machine, or my Ubuntu Gutsy machine will install rockbox.  Same error on both

"Your configuration is invalid. This is most likely due to a new installation of Rockbox Utility or a changed device path. The configuation dialog will now open to allow you correcting the problem."

at which point it takes me back to the autodetect.  Is there a bug or something here?  I thought it was just me and my lack of linux knowledge, but i get the same from Windows XP, so I'm stumped.  I didn't get any software cd with the refurb(r0xors!) c240.

Thanks,
Jack

check the back of the player and look for the dreaded v2!
You might have one of the new Sansa hw that does not work
with rockbox.

If Rockbox Utility isn't working for you, try the manual installation method as described in the manual.

Did you remember to set your Sansa to MSC mode in the original firmware first? I know it's a silly question, but it's sometimes overlooked by a lot of people.

And if it's a v2... sorry, dude.  :(

thanks, I'm gonna try the manual install, but i'm not sure if my linux skills are up for it.  I'd still like to here from anyone with experience or ideas!

It's not a v2, just the normal c240 1 gb.

Okay, it's rendered unusable after a firmware downgrade.  it comes up with message

"Failed to Load Main Image, going to recovery mode, reconnect usb."

i'm gonna try to get back to the newer firmware and see if it doesn't die on me.

other ideas?

Could you be a bit more specific? Which instructions did or do you follow?

Please also state the exact original firmware version that was on there before. Versions 1.01.05 and 1.01.06 did not have the MSC setting in the menu, Sandisk decided to remove it but I've heard that Linux doesn't care (probably because it doesn't understand the Windows MTP) so it should have worked for you under Linux.

You mentioned problems with the auto-detect in rbutil? I know that it didn't work for a long time but thought that it recently got fixed - and chosing the drive manually (in Windows) worked for me and I could install a new build for example, though I admit that I never tried to install the bootloader.

Following instructions from rockbox.org manual for sansa c240.

I since managed to get that message gone by renaming the mount point to "sansa."

I also downgraded from 1.01.05 to 1.01.03, that was the oldest i could find.  Now windows knows exactly what it is, but ubuntu pretends it doesn't exist.  no mounting works, no recognition.  I managed to get Linux MInt to let me copy music and pictures to it, but i'm stuck with this firmware and no rocksbox, which, with ubuntu cannot find it either.

I feel like I hit the "I WANT TONS OF PROBLEMS BUTTON" when I upgraded to Gutsy.

Off-topic: So downgrade back to Feisty. :)

Back on-topic: There is even older than 1.01.03; I purchased a c240 about 3 weeks ago and found the OF to be 1.01.00P. My laptop (Kubuntu 7.04 "Feisty") detected it as a UMS device immediately and mounted it. Sansapatcher found it and I had Rockbox running within 10 minutes of opening the package.

Ask SanDisk if they can help you find 1.01.00P and see if it'll help you out.

I added some instructions for downgrading the firmware (with links to old versions) in the c200 wiki after seeing someone solve what seems to be a similar problem.  Dig it.

Does Windows give you a drive letter or only a new window that looks like it was explorer? If it's the latter your c240 is still not in MSC mode which you need for the installation as previous posts suggest (and you haven't answered the question yet). Unfortunately I noticed only yesterday that a note about this is only in the "manual installation" part of the manual.

I think version 1.01.03 should be fine if there is the USB mode setting - if not have a look at our nice wiki to downgrade further. Will put this info in the manual soon.

Sorry, it is in MSC, but ubuntu acts as though it's not connected at all.  no recognition.  windows loads it as Sansa c240, not a drive letter.  Hope that helps a little.

This sounds like your player is not in MSC mode because you would get a drive letter in Windows otherwise. I remember there was something weird when I set it on mine, like needing to do it twice but don't recall the details. What does the USB setting in the original firmware which should be there now (Settings > USB) show?

in the firmware it shows MSC.  I haven't had a chance to try windows xp again since I downgraded the firmware.  I have to go to my father's house for that.  I'm a straight linux user.  I'll give it a test on windows again tomorrow.  Any idea why ubuntu just ignores it?

If I remember correctly, Linux doesn't recognize MTP devices by default. You may need to install the libmtp packages from the repository to access any MTP players. I had to do this in order to access my Dell DJ on my laptop.

It recognises them certainly (they will show up in lsusb) but without libmtp and some application which uses it you won't be able to do much with it.
