Cannot install drivers for Sansa 200R
« on: December 04, 2007, 11:24:29 AM »
I have repeatedly tried to follow the instructions for installing Rockbox on my Wooted Sansa 200r.  When I start the device in Manufacturing mode and click on the windows message (XPSR2) that tells me that an unknown device has been attached I click on the unknown USB device and try to manually reinstall the driver.  I navigate manually to the e200 manufac-driver location where the driver was unzipped.  It tells me that I have installed the new drivers, but when I try to see what drivers have been installed, a prompt says that no drivers are installed for the device.  When I manually navigate to the folder and click on the e200.inf file and try to install it I get a message that says "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware".

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

You have to boot into the original firmware to transfer files at this time.  Turn off your Sansa and plug in the USB cable; this is the simplest way to get into the OF.

Edit: Whoops, made the same assumption as Llorean did (or maybe he copied mine).  Sorry about that.

I'm sorry, I don't understand what that (transferring files) has to do with my problem of installing the rockbox drivers and then installing rockbox for this device.

There are no Rockbox drivers, and drivers have nothing to do with installing Rockbox (they aren't mentioned in the manual), so the only reason to hook it up to your PC is to transfer files once you've got Rockbox installed (and you won't get that message before Rockbox is installed).

The manual states:

   1.  Download e200rpatcher.exe
   2. Download e200-manufac-driver.zip and extract it somewhere on your computer
   3. Attach your e200R to your computer in manufacturer mode (turn on the hold switch, hold select and plug in USB while continuing to hold select for about 10s)
   4. When Windows asks for the driver, point it to the folder you extracted the driver zip file to
   5. Run the e200patcher.exe file and follow the prompts. Your Sansa should have some text on the screen. If the last line says "(something) aborted" then head to the forums and look for threads relating to your problem.
   6. If it says "Firmware Unlocked, Proceed to Step 2" then it was successful and you can continue.

It is these drivers (e200-manuf-driver) with which I am having the problem.  Without performing this first step, I can't run the e200 patcher.

Thanks for your advice.

Sorry, I was in a hurry and misread / made assumptions.

Why exactly are you doing extra things after step 4 instead of just step 5?

When I follow the instructions for entering Manufacturing mode and the prompt comes up from the task bar that an unknown USB device has been detected, if I click on that prompt, as it indicates I should do, then it restarts the Sansa and just loads the Sansa drivers.

Therefore, I leave the prompt alone and go to the system folder/hardware/device manager and double click on the unknown USB device.  I switch to the driver window and tell it to update the driver.  I tell it not to search on the web, and then that I have the necessary driver and that I want to load it manually.  I browse to the driver location and click on the e200.inf file and hit open.  At this stage I get a message telling me that "the specified location does not contain information about your hardware".  If I don't try to load the file manually but instead just tell it where to find the files, it tells me that the driver that is already being used is the best one and it doesn't let me replace it with the new one.

Sorry that this seems so complicated, but it's probably easier for you to understand than it is for me!  I am wondering if there are two (virtual) devices (one being the sansa as a USB hard disk and the other being the Sansa as an MP3 player and if this is the case perhaps I am trying to replace the drivers for the wrong 'virtual'device.

Tofudr, the exact same thing happened to me, what I was doing wrong is that the HOLD switch should be on, that means that you can see orange, therefore towards the headphones jack.

I have been working on this rockbox thing since sunday, and today I was able to do it.

YEIIII!!!

I was having a similar problem.  I am running win7 64-bit and couldn't get driver signing turned off (for the rhapsody sansa manufacturer driver).  Everything worked fine on another 32-bit win7 comp i have.  I tried to get the 64bit driver to work on two different win7 computers.  I know that i was turning off driver signing properly (i used two different methods, including the one suggested in this thread) because a similar process is needed to jailbreak an ipod.

Rockbox Rocks!

BTW, jailbreaking (and custom firmware in general) is not offically LEGAL!!!
