F40S is indeed the F series.  The S at the end refers to the color -- "Silver".

I was just searching around the net for pics of the Gigabeat S series and was wondering is it available in North America, Canada?

I haven't found any piece of info that says it's sold in North America.

I love the F series Gigabeats for the (eBay) price.  The only real lack for me (and it's rarely a handicap) is no FM radio.  Lots of CPU headroom, easy to disassemble/upgrade, decent battery life, adequate number of buttons/controls, nice screen.

My personal preference is an F10/F20 with the HD upgraded to 30GB.  The F40 is nice too, but I slightly prefer the thinner model.

Wasn't the Gigabeat X mostly sold overseas?

(EDIT) By overseas, I mean countries like Australia and various countries in Asia. I've never seen them sold here in the U.S. (plenty of F and S though) or in most European online stores.

If the Gigabeat F's had a radio they would make the iRiver H1xx/H3xx a "who cares".

Maybe it's because of the holidays, but there have been a ton of like-new Gigabeats listed on ebay the past few weeks, in the original boxes with all the original stuff.  F10's (in black, nice looking...I got one) for $65-$70.  F20's (black) for $80 and F40's (silver) for $90 (all plus shipping of course).
I've NEVER seen any F60's for sale on ebay.  Guess they didn't make to many of them.

If anybody comes up with an adapter to convert from the 44pin female connector on the Toshiba HD's to the new 40pin ribbon cable type it should be possible to upgrade Gigabeats to 160GB using the disk found in the new iPods.

No they wouldn't.  I find quite a lot of uses for the line in and line out and optical line in and line out of the H1x0.
