...and the fact that lots and lots of the 3rd party libs we use are plain C and we use them as unmodified as possible.
No, JAVA would never produce the same executable code, because java (when used as intended) isn't compiled to assembly, it's compiled to byte code which then an interpreter deals with and executes code,
Then comes interpreted programs. These are generally the least efficient. They're never directly turned into machine code.
Probably best to ignore all that though. I don't develop against Rockbox at the moment, and I may well never start.
