you killed my ipod :(
« on: December 02, 2007, 03:41:45 PM »
installed rockbox, all working fine, went to database, wanted to create a database or something, 7000 files later, asks to reboot, shuts down, hasn't turned on since, tried plugging into pc and nothing, all there is is a faint noise when you put it next to your ear, no hard-drive activity or anything else.

It is next to impossible to kill an iPod, so please refrain from emotional claims like that until we have investigated a little.  I suspect a dead battery like Bascule.  Try plugging it into the wall (not a pc) to charge for a long time (I'm talking hours), then try the reset button config.

When did it have full battery?  If it is before you started database update?  If so, it is quite possible the battery is now flat.  If you don't have a wall charger plug it into the pc and leave it for a long time.

Have you tried simply resetting the iPod by pressing and holding the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously?

well it was full before i started the database update but i have a good battery and it did it in less than 5 minutes, i don't think the battery would of died in that time. but if it is the battery, how long should i leave it and then what should i do with it?

This has happened to me A LOT. Here's what you do: wait. That's it, just leave it alone for aout 3-4 days and then plug it into the computer. I have to ask, is your original apple firmware modded with ipodwizard? I think that that has something to do with it. This happened to me and I panicked and was ready to go to the genius bar at the apple store after making and appointment, and just as a last try, I plugged it in. Miraculously, it started charging.

Here's my explanation to this odd (and quiet common) behavior:
The iPod doesn't have enough power to power up or to go into USB mode. If you wait, it completely runs out of battery and has 0 battery. Then, for some odd reason, and only then, will the computer start charging it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, when you press a single button on your ipod, it doesn't do anything, but pressing menu+select for about 5 seconds makes a clicking noise. If this is what's happening, then do the above. Also, note that the clicking noise will start to fade after a couple hours or a day.

Tell us what happens...

It can sometimes take considerably longer than 5 seconds for the key combination to cause a reset.

Just to be certain, you have done the "hold switch to on, then to off again" immediately before doing the select+menu combo haven't you ?

So rockbox didn't in fact kill your iPod?

Glad to hear you got it working.
