iPod nano strange sound glitch problem
villadelfia:
When I use my iPod for prolonged periods, after a while I start hearing occasional mp3/ogg/whatever is playing decoding errors (you know how they sound, like an mp3 stream error). If I then continue listening they gradually get worse until the point of constant glitching and skipping of a quarter of a second of sound.
If I reboot my iPod, it will immediately return EXCEPT when I wait about 2 hours before turning it on again.
I have a suspicion that it is a hardware failure in my iPod because it happens much faster if I hold my iPod in my hand than when it is in my pocket (as a matter of fact, it hasn't happened yet when it is in my pocket)
I am using the most current build (r15844) but it happens with every build.

Hmm, that sounds exactly like how my Nano glitched before the recent ATA timing fixes.
What pocket are you referring to? Tight pants pocket or jacket pocket? I guess what I'm trying to get at is whether your pocket is warm or cool.
villadelfia:
Cool jacket pockets. And what timing fix?
soap:
I'm assuming your problem, like the one I had, is heat related. Heat your Nano and it will glitch, keep it cool and it won't.
On your question:
The proper ATA timing is unknown, and Rockbox recently changed it to match IpodLinux. This fixed most all problems people were experiencing with their Nanos, but why is unknown.
Llorean:
We didn't actually change something specific in the ATA timing, really. We enabled a bit that iPodLinux had described as "The >65mhz bit" which they had deemed necessary for accessing the flash at higher speed. Mind you, 75 mhz is also greater than 65, and we're not wholly sure what that bit does due to the complete lack of documentation, but evidence suggests that it's a working part of the solution, at least.
