Crashing/hanging simulator on amd64

Solved the problem:

The strange thing was that sound was working on my system, but alot of programs that depended on ALSA were giving the errors as stated in a previous message. Now this system has seen several updates of Ubuntu and some other distributions. I have a separate partition for the home folder, which never gets formatted during the update/installation so that I do not loose my data. With as result that there has been alot of cruft collected, in the form of '.xxx' files and directories.

My advise now , clean it up now and then even if it means that you have the set all your favorite settings once again.
