Line-in recording with rockbox on the cheap
« on: November 25, 2007, 09:01:06 AM »
I had a hard time determining which devices supported line-in recording looking at the buyers guide and device comparision pages. Finding info via google about line-in support and whether a dock is required an how much I'd pay for one was also frustrating.

I looking for a cheap solution for field recordings.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

iriver H120 (iHP-120) or H140 (iHP-140)

Line In, Optical In and internal (crap) mic built onto the side.
No relatively cheap product comes close to this feature set.

and if no optical is needed, also check out iriver h320 and h340

As with the h120/140, search for them on ebay or other auction sites as they are no longer made.

the h120/140 are also advertised as iHP120/140

You said other iPods dont support recording through Headphone Jack --- If thats the case why does my Nano even have the Recording Menu Entry in its Menu...

I mean --- all it does is annoying people ---

Maybe you guys could do a little check in the makefiles to get the Source to not include those non-working Features on specific builds as the iPod Nano.

If I'm wrong - correct me please.

Because the Nano can record through the dock-connector?

"Through the dock connector" does not mean the same thing as "when on a dock that's attached to a PC."

It's fairly easy to make a cable that would allow attaching a portable mic to your Nano's dock connector while on the go.

The cheapest option would be the Archos Recorder, FM Recorder or V2 Recorder.

I'd (personally) stay away from the HWCODEC platforms. They are doomed to obsolescence in my opinion. Basically I would avoid the currently supported archos models.
