Strange behaviour with Sansa e260R
« on: November 23, 2007, 10:38:06 PM »
If I am playing a fairly long mp3 (about 30 minutes) about half of the time the track will stop about a minute from the end, as if the file ended, and skip to the next item on the playlist.  I don't know if ogg files do this, as I don't have any that long to test on at this time.  I also haven't yet noticed if the time left display is saying 0:00 when the track ends, as I am generally not looking at the screen at that point.  I have only noticed that fairly often what I am listening to will behave as if it ended and the next track will start up.

I first noticed this about a week ago, at which time I had a current build installed from a couple of weeks previous.  Thinking that perhaps it was something that might have been a problem on that particular build I tried the daily build but it didn't help.  Right now I have r15752-071122 installed (at least it is according to the info screen) and it is still happening.  Everything else seems fine.

Any ideas about what is happening, or if there is something I can do?

It could be this bug: FS#8158, though I noticed it on fairly short files (5-10 minutes), which "stop" fairly close to the end (15 sec or so). I've only encountered it on a track I'm resuming playback on. Can't easily reproduce it when I want to either...

Yes, that looks like it may be it.  I have been using 64kbs CBR files with ID3v2 tags and have often paused, stopped or rewound while listening to them.  I don't usually pause or stop songs, which could explain why I haven't had this happen on music yet.  When I listen to books or dramas, which are in files ranging between 15 and 90 minutes in length, I have to stop and resume often.  If resuming is the cause of the problem I can see why only the longer files have been affected for me.

As for the amount of lost playback, it seems to vary a lot.  The last time it was no more than about five seconds, as only the last couple of notes on the closing music of Paul Temple were chopped.  Though several times I have lost a chunck of dialog and the entire closing theme, requiring a replay of the last minute or so of the track to hear the missing parts.  So, it seems the amount missing can vary quite a bit from somewhere between a bit less than a minute to as little as five seconds.

(Just a quick edit about the above.  I just had this occur again, and this time it stopped an even three minutes from the end.  I had just looked at the player and it had reported three minutes twenty something remaining, and so it appears that perhaps the time being reported is not wrong, even thought it is jumping forward.  This was certainly the largest amount lost during playback so far.)

I also cannot easily reproduce this since if I fast forward to the end it plays fine (thankfully since I do this to hear what I have missed) and it doesn't do it all the time.  But, since I hadn't thought of resuming perhaps being a problem I hadn't tried anything in that area.  Maybe I can reproduce it that way.
