Gigabeat F40 -- Guideance Please!

I am looking for guideance... I own a Gigabeat F40. I have been reading into this whole Rockbox firmware and have worries that if I install it and something goes wrong..I will lose all 8500 songs I have on my player. I read that you can revert to the original firmware..but that doesnt save the music....suggestions...comments...please help.

(Of course no guarantees given ;), but I personally never had any problems)

Alternatively you can use the RBUtil (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/RockboxUtilityQt), but I can not say how that works as I never tried it.

You are aware that the music you have on the player will not be usable under Rockbox? Read the following for how to convert that music if you do not have a copy elsewhere (same page, next section):

Rockbox can not read the .sat file on your Gigabeat.

It is this .sat file which contains all your music playable on your Gigabeat.

That being said, Rockbox installation should not harm this file, though it will make it hard for you to use this file, as dual-booting is not an option currently with Rockbox on the Gigabeat F and X series of players.

I do want to stress, however, that (in the eyes of every Gigabeat owner I have talked to (I am one myself)) there is nothing the Gigabeat original firmware offers you over Rockbox except the playing of DRM burdened WMA files.

Installing rockbox on the gigabeat is the easiest to install. I recently installed rockbox in less then 5 hours and it was very easy and nothing went wrong.

Less than 5 hours? Don't you mean perhaps "5 minutes"?
