Sansa e280 v2 unable to change usb mode

Hi, I just bought a Sansa e280 v2.  It has firmware v03.01.11A loaded onto it.  Apparently Sandisk changed something in version 2 that gets rid of the usb mode selection in the settings.  I can't change the usb mode to msc to install rockbox.  If I was able to downgrade the firmware, do you think that the usb mode selection would be enabled?  Also, I can't figure out how to downgrade the firmware because I can't enter recovery mode (which I believe I need to use to manually downgrade/upgrade a firmware).   Do any of you have suggestions on either how to get my sandisk into msc mode or how to install rockbox in mtp mode.

I'm in the same ballpark ( a brand new shiny V2 player) Will be returning it back to store tomorrow, since the main reason to buy was to Rockbox it.
 I'll see if I can find a V1 player on fleabay. Are there any markings on V1 players to determine them by, since I'll be having to ask that question before making another mistake. My V2 box had no mention of Audible on the carton, although it did have the revised blue box/upper right corner (2000 songs mp3 instead of "up to")

Any chance you could be more specific so that other people could be warned?  Do you still have the box?  Editing the wiki is fun, fun, fun... Gives you a warm fuzzy feeling...

This was purchased at Costcos, and they often have "special" packaging that is different than normal retail shelf items.

Checked the box very carefully, there's no mention of Audible whatsoever on it.
Noticed the "K" in the model number on the SKU/UPC label, I'm thinking that differentiates it as a Costco version of the retail unit.

I've been contacting Ebay sellers w/ e280s for sale. Seems the V1s have nothing on the back bottom right corner next to model number. The V2s have "v2" next to e280

wheel for v2 is also different, its not black and not as plasticy

also confirmed way to change to USB mode (same as c200 v2)

my player does not turn on when hold is on so what i did was put hold on then plugged it into the USB connector while pressing the left (back/rewind) button, that worked, anyone else?

It seemed to me that V2 allows you to  still drag & drop anything onto it as before, when you'd need to switch modes first, but  you still cannot install Rockbox on it. Yet, anyways.

Have you been able to intall rockbox on it? ( I confirmed your technique for connecting in usb msd mode on my e280)

Beyond getting it to go into MSC/USB mode, the chipset is reported to be different than the v1 series, so a new port appears to be needed first.
