Pinball Plugin
« on: November 22, 2007, 04:16:12 PM »
Oh, how entertaining my iPod would be if there was a Pinball plugin! In my mind, I see it as not being to complicated, with a somewhat small board. You would turn the iPod sideways, like for pacman, to play.

My Cell Phone can do it, my iPod should too!

Was there a point to this?

The forum is not the place for feature requests.

Sorry. Well, this thread can be used for input instead, maybe.

So have you searched the internet for any existing pinball games with the following features? It would be a good place to start if you really want to see this happen:

Open-source
Written in C
Fixed-point only
Designed for embedded systems
Limited dependencies on libraries

This is not an exhaustive list (and may not be 100% correct) but without this sort of information, no-one will even look at the possibility...

How bout trying this website that has 1,164 games that are open source and written in c.

http://www.planet-source-code.com/vb/scripts/BrowseCategoryOrSearchResults.asp?lngWId=3&grpCategories=13&optSort=Alphabetical&txtMaxNumberOfEntriesPerPage=10

I guess you could go through it and if you spot something nice you can always report it to the rockbox crew.

I hope no one is subtly hinting that I start programming.... I can't program to save my life!

And taking a wild guess at the next reply...

"Then it probably won't happen"

http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/8211

I googled for a while, and I was shocked at the lack of GPL'd pinball games out there.  The only working ones I found were Emilia and Super Happy Fun Pinball, but they're 3D and written in C++.  There's also Linball, which doesn't work or have any code available yet*, but according to the website, would have the same problems:
Quote
The game is going to be written with Kdevelop in C and C++, using QT, SDL and Mesa libraries, supporting the DRI.
.

EDIT:
*I tell a lie. There's some code in the SourceForge CVS. Still useless.

Has anyone looked into jacking up the Windows NT pinball? That might come in handy for some source (maybe)

"Jacking up"??

I guess you mean decompiling it?

That sounds awfully illegal, and not worth the effort.

Illegal? Oh, yeah... giving it thought, I guess it would be. I'll google some pinball freeware that might be useful.

I searched around a bit.  It does seem to be very slim pickings as far as GPL pinball games are concerned.  That's a bit curious.  I even searched around on newsgroups a bit and couldn't find much.  I found one (the name escapes me at the moment) that was GPLed, but it was written in Pascal(!).

What scorche is referring to is the usage of "free" in free software.  Search for programs that are published under licenses that guarantee the user's freedoms to modify and improve the code.  Specifically, any suitable project should be compatible with the GPL license under which Rockbox is developed.  Whether or not the author charges for the pre-packaged software is irrelevant compared with whether or not they guarantee freedom to obtain and change the source code.
