Illegal? Oh, yeah... giving it thought, I guess it would be. I'll google some pinball freeware that might be useful.

I searched around a bit. It does seem to be very slim pickings as far as GPL pinball games are concerned. That's a bit curious. I even searched around on newsgroups a bit and couldn't find much. I found one (the name escapes me at the moment) that was GPLed, but it was written in Pascal(!).

What scorche is referring to is the usage of "free" in free software. Search for programs that are published under licenses that guarantee the user's freedoms to modify and improve the code. Specifically, any suitable project should be compatible with the GPL license under which Rockbox is developed. Whether or not the author charges for the pre-packaged software is irrelevant compared with whether or not they guarantee freedom to obtain and change the source code.
