Initializing Database Questions
« on: November 21, 2007, 07:57:04 AM »
I am new to Rockbox and to this forum.  First time poster.
Recently, Apple decided to upgrade their firmware to my Gen5 60gb iPod to 1.2.2 and it hosed my iPod.  I lost everything, but luckily I had it all backed up.  Since, I haven't been able to get it function properly.  After 11 hours of troubleshooting (and I'm a professional tech) and failure of both Apple support on the phone and in an Apple store (they even just suggested buying a new one when this one is 1 1/2 years old) to provide me with suitable customer support, I stumbled on Rockbox.

Apple kept trying to tell me that I had a bad hard disk, but I know my problems began immediately following their firmware upgrade, which I believe they may have pulled.  So, I wiped my iPod and uploaded Rockbox and thus far it seems to work just fine.

Everytime I try to initialize the database, it seems to totally use up my battery so I went out and bought myself a USB AC adapter at Radio Shack and it no longer shuts off.  Now, I do have about 250 songs that I have thrown on there so far, but the initialization process seems to run a really long time.  I turned it on at about 6:30pm last night at it is still running at 7am this morning and had detected 95,000 files.

Is this normal for it to find this many files at this stage in MY game?  Is it normal for it to run this long?

Thanks in advance.

That doesn't sound right.  Try running a chkdisk /f /r (or the equivalent utility on whatever OS you're using) to find and fix any file system or disk errors.

oh joy!  I ran it once during my original troubleshooting process after the Apple firmware upgrade.  I was so hoping to prove the Apple folks wrong...that it wasn't a BAD hard disk.  I really don't want to buy a new mp3 player and I am not sure whether it is worth replacing the hard disk on my own for 90 bucks.

I'll run the chkdsk again.  Alas!

Having a bad file system and a bad hard disk are two different things.

The former can be fixed with software - the latter normally requires a new hard disk.

anyone had any experience formatting an ipod for Windows hard disk with Fat 32?  If so, how'd you do it?

Have a hunt through the forums - this question has some up numerous times, and there are a couple of good solutions for it.
