iPod 4th-gen grayscale - power and freezing issues since Rockbox install
« on: November 19, 2007, 02:33:03 PM »
My 4th gen grayscale ipod is having trouble ever since installing rockbox. Is the following a typical case, with a definite diagnosis of the problem?

The ipod, when it reaches full charge, remains frozen, displaying the Apple screen until it runs out of power. This happens when the ipod is "off"; I do not know whether it happens when the ipod is on (playing for 3 hours until it reaches full power capacity), though I will try it right now. Soft reset (toggle hold then pressing menu and select simultaneously) does not get the ipod out of the frozen, back-lit apple-icon image.

Currently, I can only get my ipod to work by not letting it charge to full capacity, which means making sure it is not powered for more than an hour at a time. I have not tried changing the rockbox's power settings to see if this changes things. Which of the power settings would you recommend I change, and to what? If "Battery capacity", what number should I change it to? Would perhaps changing the "Max files in Dir Browser" solve it? I wouldn't think so...

Is there a way, with the Rockbox firmware, to prevent my ipod from reaching full charge?

Charging is independent of Rockbox, I understand, so it must be a problem with your unit I guess.

To reset, try holding Menu+Select for a long while (a full minute).  Maybe you aren't waiting long enough.

Changing the settings in Rockbox wont affect charging.

I dont think there is any way in Rockbox to prevent your ipod from reaching full charge.

When did you install rockbox and the bootloader or did you update the bootloader later?

Somehow the phrasing "ever since installing rockbox" leads me to think that it is a while ago - am I right? It's just a speculation but the description of freezes remind me of the so-called "frequency scaling bug" which the 4th generation Ipods suffered from but which is solved now for a while. Once you put it in disk mode, update the bootloader and build (if they are older, I mean).

Wow, this worked!! I've only held the Menu+Select buttons for 20 seconds maximum before, because that's all one usually needs for a soft reset. However, after 35 seconds of holding them simultaneously with the frozen backlit Apple screen on my fully-charged ipod, the ipod rebooted, and everything was a smooth ride into Rockbox land again!

Thanks so much!
