But that's what I'm saying, if you extract on the player, it should overwrite the .rockbox folder. You're telling me you're deleting it after extracting on the player...

Actually I had two files apparently one was called rockbox 2.5 and the other rockbox.  I think I see the confusion.  It only has the latest version of Rockbox now.

Neither of those folders is right. There should be a .rockbox folder, not in any other folder.

If your player is starting Rockbox and there's *not* a .rockbox folder, and a file called ajbrec.ajz (I may have typed it slightly wrong, my memory is imperfect) in the main folder  of the device (not in any other folders) then you have Flashed Rockbox.

That is exactly what I have now.  The unit seems to do everything correctly but I just can't read the screen.  The contract is too dark and it obliterates all the wording.  I do believe it is loading Rockbox but just not displaying it on the screen.  If I could see the wording I could scroll and make contrast adjustments, but I cannot.  Same issue as long ago.

Well, you said you have a "Rockbox" folder. You shouldn't.

But did you have it before? What was this "Rockbox 2.5" you were talking about then?

I had two files.  One was .rockbox and the other was .rockbox 2.5, I believe.  I apparently overwrote the .rockbox and deleted the old 2.5.  When you asked me what version, I saw 2.5.  If I could see the screen I would be able to tell you what it was actually loading.

If you rename or remove the ajbrec.ajz file, what happens?

The unit locked up and will not power down.  I can still read from it.

Hold Off to shut it off. Then try holding down the F3 button and turning it on.

I reset the file name and it shut off normally.   I also tried the combo and it rebooted with that too but the screen is too dark although the backlight is on.

Okay, turn it off, unplugged from the computer. Hold down the F1 key on the player, and while holding it, turn it on. What happens?

Amazing...amazing.  It now works.  I tried that procedure at least several times in the past but it worked this time.  The procedure was in the manual.

You are my hero...thanks for your help.
