iRiver H340 power problems
« on: November 18, 2007, 10:00:09 PM »
First, thanks to all who have contributed to developing ROCKbox.

Over the past couple of days, my iRiver H340 has been acting strangely, in that it doesn't seem to hold a charge very well.  I say "seem" because I have no real evidence whether it's a battery/power problem or something else that's causing the unit to turn off.  Regardless, it's shutting down pretty frequently; sometimes it boots up properly after it shuts down, other times it won't make it through the initialization process after it shuts down.

I loaded Rockbox partly because of the increased battery life, battery meter, etc., just today, and as I said, the problem's been going on for a few days.

Thanks for helping me out with this!

John

It sounds like your battery needs to be replaced.

That's what I thought at first (would seem like the obvious problem), but I left it playing last night and it turned off with 32% power...

The power meter is not a simple voltmeter, it is an estimate of how much energy is left in the battery based on the current voltage and the current utilisation.  It's quite a complex modeling problem that is easily tripped up when the battery starts to fail.

Right, I meant to say that it showed 32% battery charge remaining after powering itself down for some reason.  Do people still think it's the battery?  I'd rather that was the case than almost anything else...

Any good sources to buy a battery?  Installation guides?

CameronSino is highly recommended (and not expensive) - you can find their batteries on ebay I think

The forums on Mistic River http://www.misticriver.net/forums/index.php used to be the place for very good instructions on changing batteries, HDDs and all that but right now I can't get into any of the forums
