Deleting songs
« on: November 18, 2007, 01:19:29 PM »
I'm sorry if this is the wrong section, but I need a little bit of help.
Why is it that when I delete song off my ipod using itunes, the file name still shows up in rockbox. How do I remove the file names? btw I have an ipod video. Thanks

That's a bit vague..

When you say 'file name still shows up', do you mean in the file-browser (where the itunes song have nice names such as 923482skdhf89fy2390823... ) or do you mean in the database?

If it's in the database, then maybe try to initialize it again so it filters out what's not there anymore.  --  iTunes and original ipod firmware create their database right when you sync, but rockbox doesn't work with it, so it needs to be told to scan for it to know things have changed.

If the former (ie, file browser) then I'm sorry I don't know enough about iTunes to help but I'm sure some nice folk will come up, sooner or later, with an answer.

The songs still show up in the database on rockbox, but they are deleted in  the apple os. and what do you mean by, "try to initialize it again so it filters out what's not there anymore."???

Try running disktidy.  If you have deleted it and it is now in a recycle bin or equivalent, it is still on the drive and shall be seen by the database.

He's saying that the physical file does not exist on the ipod anymore, but the database entry for it still exists. You need to update your database.

And this is not necessarily true.  When you delete a file in e.g. Windows it sticks it in a hidden folder for the recycle bin.  As such the physical file is still on the disk and will be found by the database.  Disk Tidy will remove these hidden windows (and Linux and Mac do it too) files.

I know he said he deleted in through itunes, and it is possible the same thing happens there - maybe itunes has a recycle bin, maybe it uses the windows API, maybe it leaves the file and just cleans the database.
