will installing a new firmware restore my ipod?

i'm very interested in the rockbox firmware but i had an extremely bad experience with a zen micro i used to have...i was messing with the firmware without reading enough about it ended having to restore the zen (i lost about 800 songs)...i'm just asking if i can change the firmware on an ipod and without effecting the library (which is now up to about 2400 on my ipod)

Here's a general rule to live by:  back up your files.  If you don't, you will eventually regret it, regardless of whether you try Rockbox.
