Rockbox boots up, works fine, isn't detected by computer (e250r)
« on: November 17, 2007, 01:17:37 PM »
I purchased, like assumedly a few others on here, a refurbed Sansa e250r from Woot recently.  I decided to toss RockBox on it, and it runs pretty nicely.  However, one problem.

I hook the USB cable to the computer and the e250r, and the USB cable picture comes up on the e250r, yet the computer does not recognize that there is a device hooked to it.  Any advice?

Rockbox does not support USB connection yet.
so you have to go back to Sansa's firmware and connect it

I'm in the same boat with the original poster, "new" sansa e250 that I wanted to put rockbox on.

So, this may be a stupid question, but if I can't connect it with USB, what can I do with it?

Does that mean that the whole thing doesn't work?

Or does it mean that I have to use the original firmware to load music, and then I can boot into the rockbox firmware?

Having to reboot in order to connect seems like a big turn off.

Yes.

Damn.  Even though I do enjoy the spartan look and feel of it, at this point I can't justify a program that leaves out the most essential function.

The most essential function of your digital audio player isn't audio playback?  Why not buy a thumb drive if you just want a flash stick?

Well, part of the listening to music aspect of a music player is the getting the music on the thing in the first place - so I would think that having a working usb connection in rockbox is nearly essential.

Now I've been playing with this for a while, and it does seem to be fairly functional in the state that it is in. The only thing that is necessary is to make sure that the device is turned off before attaching it to the computer. It will then take care of everything else - so that isn't really that bad.

Still though - getting the usb connection working should be high on the list of to-do items in my opinion.

Of course, I appreciate all of the hard work and all :-)

It is high on the list of to-do items, but it's really also quite high on the list of "complicated things" relative to other things on the to-do list, so not many people have the time or means to work on it.

I also got mine through the woot deal.  Other than my annoyance at seemingly being unable to find it in the rockbox manual, using my computer to upload music through the sansa firmware is the easiest i've ever used.  I love drag and drop simplicity and efficiency.

I installed the new current build and after when I pluggend my sansa into my computer, the computer said he found new hardware called Rockbox Media Player... But I don't have a driver for it to work with.  :'( And I already thought that I could finally transfer files without having to reboot my sansa...

But anyhow I still love Rockbox...  ;D

As the front page says, "New USB stack with limited capability. Currently it only requests full charging power. Ignore driver popups from Windows."

i just power off then plug it in... it boots into the old firmware. works great. so before you plug it in make sure you turn it off.

Same here - don't know why everyone else finds this to be such a big deal.

to me this means nothing much. why don't you tell people to just switch it off instead of making an unhelpful post like this?
