Yeah, I've summarized the situation, as I mentioned in my blog earlier today:

Woot my firmware donation got put up on a blog. I rally dont get why the original developers at teh companies are so secretive about this. You would think that since tey dont avhe to give support for rockbox and its features and the fact it offers extra functionality that tehy would want to facilitate the open source coders.

Read how many people attempted to put Rockbox on their e200s, didn't follow the directions because they "assumed" you were supposed to do an extra step, got their e200 in a state too difficult for them to recover, and lied to get a warranty replacement.

Due to dishonest people, Rockbox doesn't exactly reduce the support costs necessarily.

As for capabilities, I do know that the video format for the e200v2 is different.  The SanDisk firmware on the e200v2 supports Divx video (MPEG-4) in the .avi format instead of the MJPEG .mov files.  I'm not sure what the limits are to allowing the video to play; I can't get any video to play that isn't converted with the SMC software.  Presumably these changes affect the c200v2 as well, though I haven't read anything about that specifically.

I think the listed processing power of the ARM922TDMI (in the v2's AS3525) and the one in the PP5022 (in the v1s) are both similar (200 MIPS?).  Whether there is some sort of hardware specific feature behind this video format change I don't know.

I saw a news item about Sandisk getting licensing rights for Divx on their devices some time ago, maybe they are just getting around to implementing a decoder in their firmware.

well i never considered how stupid people could be . I guess when i messed mine up i did more research than jsut trying to toss Rockbox on mine. But still, the more capable and options their players ahve the more popular they become, and orckbox is a capability thats whould be seen as a plus.

Speaking of stupidity... I recently bought a c200 from Woot! and tried to install Rockbox on it. I followed the instructions and it seemed to boot rockbox fine. I loaded some music on it and tried to play it but kept getting errors. I went on rockbox.org to see what was up and realized I had a v2. :(

So it looks like I somehow got Rockbox *partially* installed on a c200v2... I think?

No, it just means you bought a v1 that is labeled v2 on the outside. You're not the first to experience this.

In that case, why am I still getting codec errors? I followed the steps in the install instructions, the same mp3s play fine on a Rockboxed e280.

Actually, the more relevant-to-this-thread question is: How do you tell the difference between a v1 and v2 if the label on the outside is possibly incorrect?

Because you've done something else wrong. If you really had a V2, Rockbox would be unable to boot at all.

First off, [sarcasm] excuse me for trying to contribute but being in a hurry as i have other things to do.[/sarcasm]

And the V2 is Physically different (though only slightly) from the v1. The metal shield behind the battery is held in place and connected to the PCB via 4 plastic posts that have been melted down onto the shield. Im not willing to destroy my only MP3 player.

The best indicator seems to be the original firmware's version. On the c200s a firmware version of a v1 model has a number of 1.0x.xx and the v2 starts with 3.0x.xx. I *think* that the same applies to the e200 series (and it looks like a quick google confirms this).

that is correct. As far as i know, both of the v1's firmwares are v1.xx.xx and the c200 v2 is v3.xx.xx and 3200 v2 is v4.xx.xx but anyhting other than v1.xx.xx is not a v1
