Rockbox'd Ipod + Pioneer Ipod-Ready Reciever = NO GO!
« on: November 15, 2007, 02:52:15 AM »
Let Me Start Off By Saying, ROCKBOX IS AWESOME!

Now That I Got That Out Of The Way...

I'm Having An Extremely Disappointing Experience With The Rockbox Regarding Connectivity To My Pioneer Receiver - VSX-91THX

Before Rockbox:
Connect Ipod To Ipod-Ready Reciever Using Provided Cable (http://parts.pioneerelectronics.com/part.asp?productNum=XDE7025)
On-Screen Menu With Photo And Video Functionality, Woot!

After Rockbox:
Same Setup
ERROR! No On-Screen Menu, No Photo Viewing, No Video Viewing... But Audio Works

I Really Don't Even Care About Photo And Video Viewing In Rockbox.
What I DO Care About Is The On-Screen Menu.. How I'm I Supposed To Navigate Through My Music Collection While Sitting On The Couch FAR AWAY From The Ipod?

Is There Some Way To Fix This? I'm Using The Latest Build For iPod Video 60/80GB

No accessories for rockbox work at this time. The only thing known to work are the Fm Transmitters.
See: IpodAccessories

Damn, That Sucks.

Anyone Know Of Another OS Like Rockbox That Does Work With Accessories? (I Know This Probally Isn't The Place To Ask It... Since This Is A Rockbox Forum... But I Need Something That Can Work With Accessories!! Its The Only Reason Why I Bought An Ipod!)
Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated.

No there isn't. The only other OS which runs on iPods is iPodLinux, and they face the same issues we do. Undocumented hardware.

PS - Why are you capitalising every word ?

That Sucks

Oh, I Don't Quite Know. I Did It When I Was Younger And.. Well.. Still Doing It! lol Its Called "Camel Caps" Apparently.. [http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Camel+Caps]

Question One: Are There Any Accessories (That Are Currently Supported) That Support An On-Screen Menu? I'll Go Out And Buy It If Necessary. I Need A Way To View My Music On My TV And I NEED Rockbox.. I Love My FLACs Too Much  :(

Question Two: Is It Possible To Integrate This Feature Into Rockbox? (Either By Rockbox Developers Or A Third-Party Developer AKA My Friend Next Door) I Know It Would Make A Great Addon Because This Feature Is Pretty Much On All Ipod-Ready Receivers, Including Pioneers.

The problem has been widely discussed here before, but since you're new, I'll cut you some slack and sum up again briefly.

Implementing this as a feature in Rockbox requires two things :

1) A working serial port via the dock on the ipod
2) Someone to implement Apple's Accessory Protocol over that serial port.

Now 2) is mostly possible, since the good folks at iPodLinux have done a fairly good job on reverse engineering the protocol - so it's possible to do it.

Unfortunately there's no point doing 2) until 1) is possible. Currently no-one knows how to make 1) work.

I thought that iPod Linux HAD figured out the serial port hw since (IIRC) they HAD a serial terminal working over it.  I'll have to dl the ipod linux sources and grep them.
If they indeed have a serial driver working (might only be on certain ipods and I only have access to a mini and a 4thG) I want to look into this.

CamelCaps is a variable naming convention, when you smush words together to create name variable (such as CurIdx) instead of separating them (such as cur_idx).

Oh, and I used to stick pencils up my nose when I was younger, but I stopped doing that. 'Nuff said.

I believe they figured out the serial port on the 1st through 3rd gen iPods - 4th gen and later were never figured out. Since the Poster here has a Video iPod - that work is of no use.

Yup only the 3g ipod has the serial driver figured out for the dock.
I was willing to try porting the ipod linux serial driver to rockbox and
implement the serial remote protocol but I only have a 4g ipod and an
ipod mini so thats the end of it.
