changes upon installation...
« on: November 14, 2007, 02:10:19 PM »
Is it only the bootloader that changes on the ipod??
Just wondering as I was thinking of installing the Video/Classic Hack, and from what I have read, it is a just firmware replacement of the orignal OS on the iPod, and so if im correct, Rockbox and the bootloader should still work alright, yes??
Has anyone here tried installing the hack, specifically after already having Rockbox installed, and had any problems??
Did anyone have problems installing it before installing Rockbox??
Thanks for any light anyone can shed on this.

What is the "Video/Classic Hack" you're talking about?

Also, I assume you're aware that the ipod video and the ipod classic are two completely different things?

Yes, i know about the difference between an iPod Video and an iPod Classic.

The iPod Video/Classic hack is "a modified iPod Video firmware, changed to look as close as possible to the new iPod Classics." I wondered that would installing it affect Rockbox and/or the bootloader in any way.  You can see it here - http://generaciondealcance.com/drivendesign/classic/.  I believe it can also be found at http://ipodwizard.net

There was another post in this very forum about a week ago with someone who had managed to use that iPodWizard hack and install Rockbox at the same time. So have a search and see if you can find it.

Oh yh Godeater, just found it, thanks.
One thing though, you say that you havn't heard of anyone successfully being able to use Rockbox with a hacked iPod with iPodWizard.  Why's that?? Is it because of the files replaced on the ipod with Rockbox/iPodWizard or what??

That is not what he wrote.  Re-read his post.

I'm also unaware of anyone successfully using Rockbox on an iPod which has been hacked with iPodWizard. It might be possible I suppose - but I've never tried it, and as I say - never heard from anyone else that has.

How is this not what i said??

He said he hasn't heard of anyone doing it. That doesn't mean he HAS heard of people trying it and failing. He said, I think somewhat clearly by the "never tried it [...] - never heard from anyone else that has" that he's just heard nothing.

Anyway, I'd give very high odds for it working if you remove the Rockbox bootloader, use iPodWizard on a "clean" iPod, then reinstall the Rockbox bootloader.

kk then, it just seemed by the way he said he hadnt heard anyone successfully do it, that he had heard of soneone who may have done, though it hadn't worked for them.

ok then, i may try it, not sure yet at the moment, wasn't sure if installing the classic hack firmware would affect the rockbox bootloader.

thanks for the info anyway.

Oh, no, the Rockbox bootloader won't care at all what else is in the firmware partition after it unless you try to boot the original firmware. The only hurdle you may run into is if it somehow prevents iPodPatcher from detecting your iPod as being safe to install to, which is still somewhat unlikely.

As long as you install the Rockbox bootloader on a working iPod (do iPodWizard hacks BEFORE the bootloader install) if the Bootloader actually tells you it installed, Rockbox will work fine. Whether or not your original firmware will boot, I cannot say (it certainly SHOULD).

yeah, that is what i had thought like.  if the original firmware did somehow not decide to boot after doing this, i would probably still be able to get into disk mode and just restore i guess, right??

again, thanks for the help

You can put a completely blank formatted disk in an iPod, and still be able to recover it. So yes, just a little corrupt firmware is no problem.

Well, you're apparently referring to another thread from over a week ago.  I was referring to GodEater's post immediately above yours, where he wrote, "'There was another post in this very forum about a week ago with someone who had managed to use that iPodWizard hack and install Rockbox at the same time."

Also you were quoting an early reply I made in that thread - you will see later that the poster in question chose to go ahead anyway, and made it work. So now I *have* heard of someone doing it successfully - which is why I directed you there in the first place. Sheesh!
