Why go Rockbox?

No. If you're paying the "small monthly fee" to someone other than the copyright holder or the copyright holder's licensing agent, that doesn't make any difference.
But again, we don't discuss illegal file-sharing here, so any further posts on the issue will be deleted .

I think the manual they were suggesting you read was the Rockbox manual, not the manual for your player. You can find it on the leftside tab bar (Documentation: Manual: Toshiba Gigabeat F).
Also, you might want to read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mp3_players and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Rights_Management to catch up with some terms and concepts.

Yes, the manual the comes with the player will be essentially unused toilet paper once you have Rockbox on your player. (i.e. next to useless, and not worth reading).

Returning on topic: Why go RockBox?
For me, there is an answer over all others:

That is. I also use to follow certain directives on naming and taggin' files, and all my collection is that way, since 2001.
I refused to buy an iPod because of iTunes and its own file handling system. When I knew about RockBox, that was a dream come true, so I only buy that Apple thing to install RB, which I've done 10 seconds after open the box.
In my case, Apple had to thanks RB team for the sale.
