Basically, all the problems have come from people either
1) Not reading the instructions
or
2) Doing something wrong, then trying to fix it themselves by "guessing" what to do to fix it instead of immediately stopping, not doing anything else, and then asking for help.

As is seen on other support forums, the problems seem to be greater than they actually are.  There are far more users that successfully install and use Rockbox than have problem... it's just that none of them open threads telling us that everything works; only the users that have some sort of trouble will open a support thread.

Like Llorean says, too many people forget that we have a lovely manual that they can read, and then proceed to bork their players. Then when we ask if they have at least read the manual, what answer do we get? "I didn't know about the manual."

I helped a friend install Rockbox on a shiny new e260R, and from playing with it, Rockbox feels damn solid on the Sansa e200 platform. It's still got a few quirks (lack of a native USB mode being one), but what it does well (audio playback), it does it with gusto.

Fel2, as long as you read the manual and follow the instructions carefully, the installation process is a breeze. If there's a part of the manual you don't understand, then come ask us.

The biggest problems were
1: funny screen glitches
2: not being able to boot back into the original firmware.
From what I've read both have been fixed in the 0.5 version of Sansapatcher.

There is still an issue (maybe) with the OF freezing up on reboot while it updates its
database.  You can unfreeze the player by holding the power button down long enough
(>15 seconds usually).  This might be caused by the OF choking on a badly formated media file, or trying to parse a non media file.  Wouldn't be an issue if Rockbox had it's own usb stack (so you didn't have to use the OF to get to the flash disk).  I was always able to unfreeze the player and reboot it.

Finally the battery life under Rockbox isn't as long as with the OF, but it's still not bad!
Also the player charges faster under the OF than with Rockbox.  I usually charged mine by connecting the charger while the player was OFF which forced the OF to charge it.
Leave the charger connected a few hours after the charging icon goes out to get the last few electrons into the battery!
