Could be the harddrive. I just replaced my ipod because of the stopping and starting. Finally it was dead and it turned out to be the harddrive.

Apple replaced it and now everything runs great.

It does sound suspicious that you weren't able to do a full format.  Definitely do a CHKDSK /R /V.  Or reattempt a full format (at the command-line might give you more info).

After doing a chkdsk /r I see that during it it fixed several sectors, but it closed the window when it was completed, and i'm not sure what all it fixed, but after doing a reformat and trying to copy music it gives me a cyclic redundancy check error.  I didn't see that error message before, but the files played the same way, so I'm guessing it is the hard drive that is bad. How hard is it to replace?

Febs:
Not particularly hard.  There are guides on misticriver.net that should help you along.

pondlife:
To see the result of a CHKDSK /R, open a command prompt first (by running CMD), then type CHKDSK /R /V  (plus your H320's drive of course).

Sounds like you need a new hard disk, I fear.
