Iriver h320 only plays first few seconds of songs
« on: November 11, 2007, 08:45:10 PM »
After putting several songs on my player, I select one and it plays the first 15 or 20 seconds and then pauses and goes to the next song. How do I get it to play the whole song?

Try updating Rockbox, it might have been a bug in the version you downloaded.

Which codec(s) are you using?

Also, when you update, make sure you unzip the entire .rockbox directory structure, so the codecs also get updated.

FWIW, I have an H340 running a very recent build and it's well behaved with MP3s.

I unzipped the entire rockbox folder to the player and I've even re-installed it. I'm using the 1.29 version of the European firmware. That shouldn't make a difference, should it?

I forgot to mention the type of songs I am trying to play are .mp3 files.

An update: I recopied some of the songs, and some of them play all the way through, and others still only play a few seconds. They play fine on my computer. Could it be a problem with the hard drive in the Iriver? I'm not sure what else to try.

1.  Please don't post multiple messages in a row.  If no-one has responded to you, edit your prior post.

2.  Please check your Rockbox build version and report back what build you are running.  The posting guidelines (see my signature) explain how to find this information.

3.  Try running a chkdisk /f from a command prompt to see if your H300's hard drive has any file system corruption.

Information about chkdisk:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx?mfr=true

As well as a CHKDSK /F, try a CHKDSK /R (assuming you're using Windows).

After running chkdsk it finds no errors. I reformatted the drive using quick format, because when I didn't have quick format checked it sat there for several hours and didn't complete the format. I reinstalled everything, and it was charged according to the voice indication of the battery level, but after a few minutes it just shut itself off. Is there anything else I can try, or anywhere to send it to have it looked at?

Did you try using the /R option with chkdisk like pondlife suggested?

Could be the harddrive. I just replaced my ipod because of the stopping and starting. Finally it was dead and it turned out to be the harddrive.

Apple replaced it and now everything runs great.

It does sound suspicious that you weren't able to do a full format.  Definitely do a CHKDSK /R /V.  Or reattempt a full format (at the command-line might give you more info).

After doing a chkdsk /r I see that during it it fixed several sectors, but it closed the window when it was completed, and i'm not sure what all it fixed, but after doing a reformat and trying to copy music it gives me a cyclic redundancy check error.  I didn't see that error message before, but the files played the same way, so I'm guessing it is the hard drive that is bad. How hard is it to replace?

Not particularly hard.  There are guides on misticriver.net that should help you along.

To see the result of a CHKDSK /R, open a command prompt first (by running CMD), then type CHKDSK /R /V  (plus your H320's drive of course).

Sounds like you need a new hard disk, I fear.
