Can I get my Sansa e250 to support micro sdhc?
« on: November 08, 2007, 10:41:19 AM »
Just wanted to know if Rockbox would enable my Sansa e250 to use a micro sdhc card.

Yes it can. In theory, Rockbox should be able to read microSDHC cards up to 32GB... when they come out, of course.  ;)

Would you know if the RB will query the music stored on the SD card with the database menu, or would it be accessed through the FILE menu? My e250 is being delivered in a few days (Woot.com for 30 bux) and I will be installing RB on it. That would be a great function if I could view all the songs (total of 4gb) in one database.

Just thinking, that because it's a seperate partion, how RB handles the 'external' storage of the SD card. What if I have multiple SD cards, each with different catalogs of music, or files? Can I hot-plug the card without rebooting the e250?

Thank you,
Scott

I'll be honest and say that I'm not entirely sure how the music is handled on the Database menu. I don't own a Sansa e200, but I do want to purchase a c200 series soon to help facilitate testing on that platform. Since the c200 series also supports microSD cards, then I can get a good idea how the files are handled.

Looking around on the forums, however, will bring you the information you need. But perhaps a Sansa owner/dev/user can step forward to help answer that question.

As for hot swapping: I do believe we've had that added to SVN recently. Again, I'll let a dev or fulltime Sansa user step forward to clarify.

In the file view, the card appears as a separate directory.

In database, I believe will show card contents, but if you hot swap (which is supported), I believe you have to reinitialise the database to get the new card contents to show up, it will not autoupdate.

Standard disclaimers apply.

I have a MicroSD card 2Gb and the database does cover the MicroSD card.

However, as it currently stands, Rockbox does not support USB transfers via Rockbox, so you have to use original firmware to initate file transfer into the device.

Original firmare can only read 2 Gb cards max.

So currently you have two choices.

Use a 2 Gig max card in the Micros SD and transfer to the player

Greater than 2 Gig card and use an external card reader currently to transfer data to the MicroSD card.

Either way, I think you'll be fine.  And 35 bucks for an E250.  I may have to pick it up as a backup.

I'm watching woot.com for the next time they have an e200 series
player.  Now that the sansa view is out (and I see some activity
for this one in rockbox development) we should see more e200
players out there cheap.

I purchased a Sansa e250 for my wife this holiday season. I also picked up a 4gb MicroSDhc card.... I talked to sandisk support and they said that v1 of the e250 on supports a max of 2gb microSD cards.

If I install rockbox on my v1 e250 will its be able to read the 4gb mircoSDhc card?

Thanks!

If you install rockbox, your sansa e250 v1 will support higher than the 2GB max on the current v1 firmware.

Sansa has stated that MicroSD support is a hardware limitation on the V1's but many Rockbox users do use 4GB cards and higher.

Please note that currently, USB transfers are not available via Rockbox, so if you buy a greater than 2GB card all transfers will have to be via a card reader.

Also, cards that are greater than 2GB are not readable by the original firmware, so you will only be able to play back or display the contents of the card via Rockbox.

rockbox is an alternative firmware for the e200 (and multiple other mp3 players) and can be found on this very site.

Just to clear this up, I hope.

I have a Sansa E260 (4GB) V1 with a 8GB microSDHC card installed.  It works perfectly with RockBox.

I also have a Sansa Fuze (8GB) V1 with a 16GB microSDHC card installed.  It also works perfectly with RockBox.
