Video convertion help needed
« on: November 07, 2007, 06:15:21 PM »
Hey. I have a 1 gen ipod nano with rockbox installed. All i really need is a clarify somthing for me. I have winff installed on my computer. When i tried  to convert somthing that was only about 5 minutes it took A LONG time. Like 3+ hours. If this is normal you can just tell me and ill shut my mouth and wait. When i was looking at the main MPGE player page and the one thing that i kind of got confused on was #3.

"Run WinFF, pick your desired player from the list, type in any overrides in the boxes at the bottom of the window"

Is this part nessicary cause i didn't really understand it. I never really had a list in my version of winff. I did have a list though on what type of videos i wanted it to convert. The only ones i really thought were compatible were "Xvid for ipod" and "H.264 ipodlinux".

I also saw this vid on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAEng3jVBxI

and his convertion was only about a minute

Thank you for your help.  :)

First: You did not properly replace the presets. This is why your list doesn't have the right options.
Second: WinFF isn't our software. We mention it in the wiki as a solution, but we really don't provide support for it.
Third: We especially do not provide support for "Random youtube videos." If you want to know what he did, email him and ask...

Sorry about the youtube thing. I didn't mean i needed help with it.  I just meant it as an example of his speed. How should i replace the presets? I right clicked the presets and saved the targer, saved it to the desktop, and moved it into the winff folder it and it said it replaced it

Well, you're converting to the wrong format anyway, h264 won't play in Rockbox and takes something like ten times the amount of time to convert to, if not more, for many people.

Did you follow the instrctions on the wiki ?
The format for Rockbox should be mpeg2 video.

Yes i followed everything. When i click presests.xml, it goes to a webpage with a bunch of code stuff so i saved the target on my desktop and put in the folder i was suppose to and it said it replaced the old file but it still doesnt work. Also thats the problem. theres no mpge2 selection

Aha... I think the Wiki needs to be updated. There is a copy of presets.xml in the %appdata%\winff\ folder (type "%appdata%\winff\" into the address bar to go there) that needs to be overwritten.

Aha... I think the Wiki needs to be updated.

Not entirely correct...
If you download the WinFF version stated in the Wiki (2.9), then the location of the presets.xml file is correct (C:\Program Files\WinFF). However, the later WinFF versions store the presets file in the location pointed to by %APPDATA% (which is something like C:\Documents and Settings\User.Name\Application Data)

EDIT: I have just tweaked the Wiki page to correct the download link (v0.291, not 0.29). I'll leave it to someone else to see if it would be better to move to v0.3x or not...

Moving to 0.3x doesn't offer any significant benefits (that I've seen at least) but I plan to provide some presets for the new version "when I get around to it."

Due to some changes in the decoder in Rockbox, we now get better FPS and have more flexibility in resolution options, so those I picked for 16:9 especially aren't ideal. As well there aren't presets for at least one recent addition to the list of players. So, when I have time I'll post up some new ones, and since they're new anyway, I ought to make them for 0.31 or whatever the current version is when I do it.

I just don't know when I'm going to get around to it.
