Apple Hi-Fi: Rock Box support?

(1/1)

rambn:
Does rock box support the Apple Hi-Fi?  I did a search and was only able to find old posts that said most dock connector hardware isn't supported.  I hope that's changed.  I would really like to switch over.

thanks!

Chronon:
Line in/out works as does charging.  There is currently no support for Apple's accessory protocol so any device that must send commands to the iPod in order to function will not work properly.

rambn:
Thanks for the quick reply.  I gather that rock box install allows for a dual boot.  Will that enable me to use the old firmware, access my songs (although I doubt that the apple firmware would even recognize mp3, is that right?) and access my hi-fi?

Or should I just forget about using my Apple Hi-Fi in the foreseeable future?  I mean, do people really want rock box so much that they decide to just take a loss on some of their previously purchased hardware?  I kind of do, but that would be really sad not to use that thing.

thanks again.

Febs:
The Apple firmware recognizes MP3, but of course, only if you load it with iTunes (or some other program that creates the iTunes-style database).

I think many people continue to manage their music using iTunes.  While this results in strange, obfuscated directory structure it will allow you to listen to music both in Apple's firmware and in Rockbox (you will probably not want to use the file browser).  Then if you really want to use an accessory that Rockbox doesn't support you can reboot into Apple's firmware to use it.  I used to do this in order to use an iTrip FM transmitter, for instance.
