Rockbox Dual-Boot + Folder Specific
« on: November 03, 2007, 11:43:55 PM »
I am pretty sure this is the correct forum to post this in.

Okay, here's my problem/situation. Any help would be much appreciated.

Currently, I am running the Classic Firmware Hack v2.0.5 (5.5G 80GB firmware) by the Devs at iPodWizard.net, an awesome hack that livens up the iPod.

But basically, I need some help with a dual boot.

I listen to a few audiobooks on my iPod, but I absolutely hate it how they get mixed up in amoungst my artists, albums and songs. Really frustrating.
What I am doing also, is importing my .txt files to my .mp3 files via the lyrics tag field, so that I not only listen to the audiobook, but can also read along.

I was thinking, and hence asking this forums members of a solution.
I was thinking of dual booting. The Classic Hack for my music and Rockbox for my audiobooks, so that I can keep them separated from each other.

But... I would only want Rockbox to look at a specific folder, ie: ignore the rest of the contents on my iPod and look at a specfic folder that I tell it. Inside of this folder will be my bookmarkable .mp3 files with lyrics. (Also, does Rockbox have a limit on the amount of characters able to be shown in the lyrics field, another problem I am running into on the standard/hacked Apple firmware?, because the text imported into the .mp3 file can sometimes be huge!

So basically, this is what I want:
A dual boot, Classic Hack + Rockbox
Classic Hack looks at music, videos, photos and everything it normally looks at...
whereas Rockbox looks at a specific folder only that contains bookmarkable .mp3 files with massive lyrics in them.
Is this possible?
(I have been reading around the forums, but this is a pretty specific need, hence the start of a new topic).

Thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware, Rockbox doesn't support embedded lyrics at all.

I'm also unaware of anyone successfully using Rockbox on an iPod which has been hacked with iPodWizard. It might be possible I suppose - but I've never tried it, and as I say - never heard from anyone else that has.

It's not possible to limit Rockbox to a specific folder - however with Rockbox's file viewer set to anything other than "View all", you won't see your iTunes loaded content as it will be in the hidden iPod_Control folder.

As mentioned above - Rockbox doesn't use this tag at all as far as I know.

There is a patch in the tracker somewhere for lyrics support so you would have to check out the capabilities of that.

Edit - Check out FS #7432

Thanks for the replies guys. I managed to do what you described... install rockbox and just use 'file view' to view the folder without telling RB to look for the hidden iPodControl folder.

I did install RB... and it worked just fine with the Classic Hack, dual booting and all. So now you can say, that it does work.

Thanks again guys!
